Yabarra: Gathering of Light

‘Yabarra – Gathering of Light’ is a free, immersive Kaurna storytelling experience involving large-scale light and sound artworks along the Karrawirra Parri (River Torrens).

A new event for the 2019 Adelaide Fringe, Yabarra: Gathering of Light will light up the Torrens riverbank reeds, surrounding grasslands and paths to tell the stories of the Kaurna people’s ancestors who lived by the river. Yabarra will run across all 31 nights of the Fringe from 8:30pm – midnight each night, and will take festival-goers on an immersive cultural tour as they make their way along the riverfront surrounding the the University of Adelaide footbridge.

Projectors will turn tree foliage into faces; water screens will create an interactive waterscape with our aquatic life; large-scale inflatable animals that once inhabited the river such as the snake, dingo, quoll, platypus, bilby and echidna will be illuminated sharing their stories and connection to the land; immersive light installations will share knowledge of the six Kaurna seasons; and traditional songs, sounds and narration will fill the air and guide you on an unforgettable journey.

For people of all ages and from all walks of life, Yabarra will be a unique and electrifying way to view these Kaurna stories in a new light.

Yabarra is a completely free and family friendly installation.
