You Are A Doughnut: Adelaide Fringe 2023 Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️   4 Stars for an educational, musical show with more fart jokes than you can poke a stick at!

Review by Claire Davill

Never have I seen so many kids so excited to have two relief teachers turn up for the same lesson! Teachers Oesoph E. Gus and Dewey Dean guide everyone through a biology lesson in digestion, charting what happens to your food from cheek to, well… cheek. Dewey plays the clown to straight man Oesoph, but by the end of the show, both are cracking fart jokes and singing the praises of how you make poo.

Game show references keep the adults chuckling, with “I’m a nobody and I want to go home”, “So you think you’ve got gas” and “Millionaire trot-seat”, as well as repeated interjections from comedian Dave Poos. Dewey’s interpretive bile dancing is a masterpiece in choreography.

Slapstick, gross foods, flying enzymes and a toilet paper cannon keep the kids at the edge of their seats. Several songs are expertly performed, with clever harmonies and lyrics. The songs are a little too long to keep younger kids engaged, but there’s never too long to wait until the next poo reference to catch their attention. The lighting of a fart-filled balloon ensures the show ends with a literal bang.

The kids will be having so much fun they won’t realise how much they’ve learned – these relief teachers are the masters of educational entertainment. By the end of the show you’ll understand exactly why you are a doughnut, and why you are also a unicorn (hint: it involves rainbow poo!)
