Unley Oval Hilltop Playground

The City of Unley has opened their new Hilltop Playground at Unley Oval.

The new playground replaces the old pirate ship and is found at the corner of Frederick Street and Trimmer Terrace at the top of Unley Oval.  The new play space is jungle themed and includes a 5-metre tower with great views from the top, plus climbing equipment.

There are two slides – a big one from the top of the tower, and another lower one for littlies. Ground cover consists of new rubber soft mat and bark chips.

Balance beams and logs have also been installed, as well as a new ‘hip hop’ rocker (rotating see-saw swing, pictured below) aimed at providing something for older children.

The playground is partially fenced, as it has always been. Public toilets are located nearby (north-east corner of Unley Oval).

An existing playground for toddlers, which is enclosed, can be found at the bottom of the hill.

The oval

The oval itself is also perfect for ball games and running around (when there aren’t footy games on the weekend).

The tower

The tower features a climbing wall on one side and jungled themed graphics throughout.

As you climb up the tower there are views of the oval, especially when you get right to the top and can peer through the two ‘tribal owl’ eyes.

The smaller slide is good for toddlers. The tube slide is about 3m high and is probably better suited to confident preschoolers or school aged kids.

What we liked about the Unley Oval Hilltop Playground:

  • The “Amazon” jungle theme – the graphics on the tower are reminiscent of totem poles, jungle vegetation, and jungle animals
  • The great views of the oval from the top of the tower – especially through the two ‘tribal owl’ eyes
  • Older kids will probably love the ‘hip hop’ rocker though little ones may need to be supervised around it
  • Two slides – one perfect for toddlers and littler preschoolers and the other is more advanced

Things to consider:

  • It’s only partially fenced
  • Bark chips may be an issue for some babies and toddlers that like to put anything and everything in their mouth
