The Leckie Playground at Mount Torrens | Adelaide Hills | Review

Upgraded Mount Torrens Playground in the Adelaide Hills.

by Katrina Gogel

The Leckie Playground in Mount Torrens has received a much-needed upgrade recently thanks to the Adelaide Hills Council. Working in collaboration with nature play specialists Climbing Tree, they have created a space that will be well used for years to come by locals, and visitors alike.

Suitable for all ages, the playground is located on a quiet back street next to the town’s oval. The wonderful Amy Gillet Bikeway is only a couple minutes ride away, so be sure to bring your bikes to the Hills and make a day of it.

Here’s what’s on offer at The Leckie Playground in Mount Torrens:

Hopping out of the car, your eyes are automatically drawn to the huge log scramble. Older kids will have fun working their way up and over the logs to reach the top, while adventurous youngsters will enjoy giving it a go too!

A big wooden fort with double slide is a feature of the Mount Torrens playground. A large ramp at the back makes this piece of equipment suitable for all ages.

Kids who love to climb will enjoy tackling the rock-climbing wall, and there’s a great bark chip pulley system (with chute!) on the other side of the fort which will provide lots of fun.

There’s some standard play equipment on offer too, such as a swing set (with basket swing) and monkey bars.

In a cleared area behind the fort and log scramble, three tepees have been built.

And there’s a huge sandpit, which sits beside a little rocky creek with wooden foot bridge. Imaginations will run wild here, especially when there is water in the creek. We’ve visited this playground twice recently, with Master five spending the majority of his time in the sandpit and creek, creating delicious cakes and beer!

Beer anyone?

A grassy picnic area is shaded by a beautiful big gum tree, and there’s plenty more space to run free at the local oval, which you can access through a gateway nearby.

The Amy Gillet Bikeway is close by!

We highly recommend combining your playground visit with a bike ride along the wonderful Amy Gillet Bikeway, which starts at Oakbank and ends at Mount Torrens.

For a family friendly outing, we suggest parking your car at the new Charleston playground (review coming soon) and riding to Mount Torrens and back, or vice versa. This section of bikeway is the most scenic, and kids will enjoy cycling through farmland and finding hidden treasures – such as tyre swings, along the way. Once at the end, follow the dirt road a short way to the Mount Torrens playground for a play and picnic! Return back to your car via the same route.

Please note: The track ascends uphill from Charleston towards Mount Torrens. Little legs may tire, but older children should be fine.

Facilities and Things to Note:

  • Public toilets are located at the nearby Mount Torrens oval

  • Shaded picnic table + lots of logs for parents to sit on
  • Parking is along the street, or at oval
