The Dutch Pantry – Review

By Jo Parkinson

Welkom in de Nederlandse pantry!

You don’t have to travel to Europe to dine in a cute little Dutch café… there is one located right here in Adelaide! The Dutch Pantry on O.G Road at Klemzig has recently had a make-over, and it’s worth checking out. I enjoyed a visit here with my daughter and best friend who is Dutch.

You won’t be able to miss the extraordinary, brightly coloured shop front. It’s quite a work of art and features gorgeous details such as a windmill, tulips and clog-wearing characters. As you walk under the arch of the sign, you are greeted by a welcoming little building that looks like it’s been transported straight from a Dutch village. There is a large map of The Netherlands on the wall and bicycles decorate either side of the entrance. Did you know there are more bicycles than people in Holland?!

The cafe itself is now undercover and has plenty of room for diners. A beautiful wall to wall print of buildings along canals, gives you the sense you could be sitting in a café in Amsterdam, and little trinkets decorated throughout are a nice touch.

The menu has lots of authentic Dutch dishes on offer. Of course, many of the items are written in Dutch but don’t worry if you don’t speak the language! A handy glossary on the back page explains most things, as well as pictures next to each dish so you can see what it will look like. And as the menu says, if it’s still all Dutch to you and you need help, just ask and a friendly staff member will assist you.

Whether you are after a snack, feast, or something sweet, there are many yummy dishes to choose from. We ended up getting the ham and gouda cheese tosti (toastie), beef kroketten (battered minced beef that’s crispy on the outside and soft in the middle) and Limburg Feast (rookworst sausage with sauerkraut, mustard, and onion). For dessert we ordered the poffertjes (tiny pancakes), which my daughter loved so much she is still talking about them! I can also recommend the Dutch hot chocolate, it’s one of the best hot chocolates I’ve ever had. A lot of the food seemed to be deep fried and came with patat (chips) on the side, but everything we had was delicious and reasonably priced.

Once you’ve finished your meal in the cafe, you can head on into the shop area where there are hundreds of Dutch items for sale, including giftware, lollies, a huge selection of grocery items and even clogs! My friend took the opportunity to stock up on a few goodies for her mum to enjoy. If you can’t make it to the store, the website conveniently offers online orders.
