Lochiel Park Playground Review

Tucked away amongst native trees and wetlands is a playground with nature play, lots of climbing equipment, swings, playing fields and picnic facilities.

By Claire Davill

Lochiel Park Green Village in Campbelltown is an oasis surrounded by native forest, wetlands, public art and the River Torrens. At one end of the village, away from the houses and surrounded by nature, is a playground with a nice variety of equipment. There is plenty of nearby parking at the end of Lochend Drive, off of Lochiel Parkway.

The central feature is a large tower with a long tube slide. Ladders, a climbing net and fireman’s pole surround the three storey tower, and there is a telescope at the top to take in the view.

Underneath the tower is a noughts and crosses spinner game, a maze and a shop counter for imaginative play.

There are nature play opportunities here too, including a cubby house frame with plenty of local sticks to add to it, and a large sand pit that’s well shaded by the trees. The sand pit and other sections of the playground are bordered by concrete benches featuring colourful mosaics of local wildlife. Bottle trees provide more shade with natural wooden benches underneath the shade of the largest tree.

A climbing frame suitable for smaller children and a springy frog seat are surrounded by ample softfall. There’s also a spinning pole with a platform here.

The bark chip softfall area has a large swing set with basket swing, regular swing and toddler swing under the shade of the nearby trees.

A sheltered picnic table and barbeque border the playground, and there is a toilet block across the lawn towards the River Torrens, a 2 minute walk away (this is signposted). Note that the barbeque will not operate on days of high fire danger.

The playground relies on trees for shade, and depending on the time of day, some parts of the playground may be in full sun, so make sure to take along hats and sunscreen.

Moving further out from the playground, there’s a large lawn area with soccer goals for ball play, and a basketball half court. There are paved and unpaved paths winding around the playground and through the nearby forest and wetlands. These paths are flat and quiet, so they’re good for exploring on foot or by bike. There’s also some exercise stations along the paths for older kids and adults to practice sit ups, push ups and chin ups.

As you make your way around the paths through the bushland you’ll come across sculptures and artwork. If you are lucky you’ll also spot a koala in the trees.

The wetlands have several boardwalk paths to explore as well. In springtime there will be the constant calling of pobblebonk frogs to listen to, and there are always lots of water birds to spot around here.

The playground is not fenced, but is away from any roads and traffic. The nearby wetlands are not fenced and small children will need close supervision if you are exploring these areas.

Lochiel Park Green Village has one entry point by car, and can be a little tricky to find. The easiest approach is from Lower North East Road, turn on to Hill Street, which then becomes Lochiel Parkway. Turn off onto Lochend Drive to access the playground car park. You can also easily access this playground from the Torrens Linear Park bike track.
