Viewpoint Cafe in Waikerie – Review

By Claire Davill

Perched on top of cliffs overlooking the Murray River, this unassuming petrol station hides a family-friendly cafe with a huge range of food and drink, incredible views, and space for the kids to run and play.

The Viewpoint Cafe is located on the Sturt Highway, just out of the township of Waikerie. It’s a great option for a meal if you’re passing through, or if you’re staying in Waikerie. It’s open from 6am until 10pm, seven days a week, so it’s a great option for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

From the outside, it looks like a normal petrol station, but through the shop and out the back, is a wonderful shaded deck overlooking the Murray River, with a fenced lawn and even a small playground. It’s pleasant out on the deck even on very hot days, although the playground is not shaded and gets quite hot in the full sun.

There is also indoor seating if you don’t want to sit outside, and you still get a bit of a view through the large windows.

You’ll find the usual service station food here, but there is also fantastic breakfast options like waffles, eggs and bacon, and generously portioned BLT sandwiches.

Lunch and dinner options include a variety of burgers, soup, seafood and curries. The portions are large and the prices are surprisingly good for a regional cafe.

There’s a full range of hot and cold drinks including large smoothies and milkshakes, and bubble tea.

(Menu as at December 2022)

The view from the deck and lawn is spectacular, especially when the river is in flood, when we visited in December 2022. You can see distant cliffs and lagoons from up here. It’s definitely worth a stop!

Viewpoint Cafe in Waikerie is open 7 days a week from 6am to 10pm.

Location:

12905 Sturt Highway, east of the Waikerie township
