Nilpena Ediacara National Park
It may have been 550 million years in the making, but South Australia’s newest national park was officially opened by Minister for Environment and Water Dr Susan Close in April 2023.
Nilpena Ediacara National Park is home to one of the world’s most significant fossil sites due to the unique state of preservation of the early record of animal life. Nilpenaโs sigยญnifยญiยญcance is inteยญgral to the bid for World Herยญitage for the Flinders Ranges and in April 2021, the Flinders Ranges was placed on Australiaโs World Herยญitage Tenยญtaยญtive List.
Located 500km north of Adelaide, the park highlights include a world-class audio visual experience featuring a complete fossil bed that comes to life with the latest leading-edge 3D animation technology. The visยญiยญtor precinct includes three hisยญtoric pasยญtoral buildยญings โ the forยญmer blackยญsmith shop, shearerโs quarยญters and woolยญshed.
To preserve the integrity of the region, access to the park is via pre-booked guided tours only. There is a high levยญel of interยญest in this park and they advise bookยญing your tour well in advance of travel.
Mild temยญperยญaยญtures from April to Octoยญber make this periยญod an ideal time to visit and the most comยญfortยญable in the Flinders Ranges region.
