Looking for a hands-on farm experience for the kids? Dairy Adventures in Mannum offers feeding, milking and more at their working dairy farm.
Review by Adaire Prosser
Dairy Adventures in Mannum on the River Murray offers a fun and informative hands-on experience for kids of all ages. Located just outside of Mannum (approx 75 minutes drive from Adelaide), they offer a range of experiences including feeding and milking their dairy and beef cattle.
The feeding experience allows kids to feed cattle of different ages, from newborn calves, adolescents and even Julius the four year old bull. The experience is hands-on with filling grain buckets from the silos, filling troughs, and feeding milk to the newborn calves.
Dairy Adventures has calves year-round to go and visit. As part of this experience you also get to visit and feed the older calves in paddocks, meet Julius the 1000kg bull, and see the pregnant and birthing cows. We were lucky enough to spot a calf that had been born earlier that morning.
As well as the feeding experience, there is also a milking experience on offer. We got a tour of the milking shed where Narelle the owner explained the process of getting milk from the cow to the store and how much milk came from a cow.
There is plenty to see and do including an activity table and sensory trough for the young ones, to checking out (and maybe getting in) some of the tractors.
Dairy Adventures is available to book experiences Mondays to Saturdays, and as part of your booking you get a keepsake photo. Being close to Mannum, you can head into the town before or after your visit to make a day of it. They also take bookings for school excursions if you are looking for the next class trip.
