Visit the Studio at the Art Gallery of South Australia
Many families are familiar with START at the Art Gallery which is a special event for families on the first Sunday of every month. However, you may not realise that The Studio space is open for visitors on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. In fact it’s actually lovely to visit The Studio during the week (during school holidays and when it’s not booked for school visits) as it’s much quieter.
The Studio is transformed into a beautifully inspired space influenced by the current exhibitions where families are invited to visit any time and there are always great art activities for the kids – all free.

The Studio: Make An Impression | 4 Jul – 8 Nov 2026
South Australian artists Arlon Hall and Billie Justice Thomson invite you to slow down and lose yourself inside a painting.
Thomson’s vibrant compositions draw on everyday objects, Australian imagery and familiar food and drink, evoking a quiet sense of nostalgia. Hall works across painting, drawing and sculpture, exploring the interplay of line, colour and form through moments of overlap and tension.
Inspired by Monet to Matisse: Defying Tradition this Studio invites hands-on exploration of light, colour, line and shape to create your own abstract coloured, layered line drawing.

Just outside there is a snakes and ladders board on the ground to play with too. Plus, The Studio is right near the Art Gallery cafe, so you can grab a coffee, snack, or lunch too. There is a grassy area for kids to run around on next to the outdoor tables of the cafe, but the fence at the far edge of the grass is not closed.
The Studio is open weekends, public holidays & school holidays.
The Art Gallery of South Australia is open daily, 7 days a week, from 10am until 5pm. (Closed Christmas Day)
