Have a cracker of a day singing and dancing to hits at A Day on the Green – an outdoor event in the Barossa Valley, with your kids in tow (Bunnings hats optional).
Review by Carla Caruso
A Day on the Green is Australia’s original and premier outdoor winery concert event.
And if your kids have never been to a concert before (like my 11-year-old twins hadn’t), it can be a great way to introduce them to live music. Namely because they don’t have to just sit in one seat for hours!
They can move around in between sets, dance barefoot in front of their deck chair, grab fare from the food trucks (get in early to avoid the queues), and run around under the misting tent too.
Our family-of-four checked out A Day on the Green at Tanunda’s Peter Lehmann Wines on Sunday 2 February 2025. (More such shows are being held at the winery over the summer.)
Kids aged under 12 are permitted free entry in the general admission lawn area. Although, please note that the organisers say that parents should give consideration as to whether the environment is right for their kids.
Some performers may have content and/or lyrics which you may consider inappropriate for children, and as a licensed event, alcohol will be available to patrons 18 years and older,” the site says.
“For parents considering bringing a baby to A Day on the Green – bringing your baby is entirely your prerogative, however not recommended, for both the child’s wellbeing and safety, and your enjoyment of the show.”
In the lawn area, we were permitted to bring camping chairs, a cooler bag, and sealed plastic bottled waters up to 1.5L in size. (Empty, translucent plastic bottles can be brought into the venue to use at its free water stations.)
There are no sheltered areas, so you must come prepared for rain or shine, whether that’s bringing a hat and sunscreen or a poncho (umbrellas aren’t allowed).
It’s also advised that you wear appropriate footwear as it’s a dusty 900m hike from the car park to the concert site (unless you’re prepared to wait for a ride in the free shuttle buggie, which can only take about five people at a time).
Gates to the show opened at 3pm and required us to go through a security check. The first act – Melbourne songstress Lotte Gallagher (only 18 and so talented!) – kicked off at 4pm.
Following her, with roughly half-hour breaks in between, was New York pop rock band X Ambassadors (Unsteady‘s a favourite track) and the indie Montaigne (who represented Australia at Eurovision).
The biggest drawcards, though, were English singer-songwriter Calum Scott (Dancing on my Own, You Are The Reason) and Irish rock band The Script (Breakeven, Hall of Fame, Superheroes).
I knew some of the artists’ songs from the radio, but I didn’t know much more about them. And that’s the beauty of going to a concert event like this: it opens your eyes to new acts, and then when you hear their tunes, you feel more of a connection as you’ve seen them live.
I loved hearing about how Calum Scott used to work in HR and was in a Maroon 5 tribute band before he found fame (via Britain’s Got Talent). My kids, meanwhile, were impressed looking up each artist’s monthly listener numbers on Spotify, which numbered in the millions.
The event ended around 10pm.
For an unforgettable day of cool tunes, good food, people-watching, and relaxed, festival vibes, you can’t go wrong. It’s a fab way to make the most of the warm summer nights.
