Definitely NOT A Hungry Game: A Parody Musical – Adelaide Fringe Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars for a hilarious parody-musical-comedy-drag hybrid (18+ recommended).
Review by Aesha
For fans of The Hunger Games, RuPaul’s Drag Race and musicals (AKA most millennials and Gen-Zs), Definitely NOT A Hungry Game: A Parody Musical presented by Dramafreak productions is a hysterical mix of all of those and more.
The show is the epitome of silliness and absurdity that makes the Fringe so fun. Boasting a whopping 18 original songs, the performance pays homage to its inspiration while being packed full of comical references that will have you cry-laughing with your Fringe-mate(s). It’s especially aimed at those of us who have a little bit too much screen time, with references to unexpected memes and pop culture that the “chronically online” will appreciate.
In this parody that is “not legally the same” as the series it is based on, the characters are not quite the same as one might remember. For instance, Gale is a boisterous Australian bogan, Primrose is on drugs, her mother is an alcoholic, Rue is a social media addict and Effie is a fabulous drag queen! It certainly offers a lot more than your ordinary run-of-the-mill parody.
The two-hour runtime flies by as you marvel at the chaos unfolding on stage. At the end of the show, you’ll be asking yourself, “How did they even think of that?” While the concept seems niche at first, anyone who is a fan of the series, or a comedy musical fan in general is likely to enjoy it. There are jokes for everyone and adults of all ages in the audience were laughing along and having fun.
What’s perhaps even more impressive than the comedy aspect is the talent of the small cast. Each cast member injected pure energy into their performance and their stamina was quite impressive considering the lengthy run-time and just a 15-minute intermission. Not to mention, they look like they’re having the time of their lives while doing it. They do an exceptionable job at managing to stay true to the characters (so that if you’ve seen the movies even once you’ll know exactly who is who), but parodying them in the most outrageous way.
All of that is without mentioning the stellar singing and dancing numbers that had the audience’s eyes glued to the stage. It’s clear that the cast are not only incredible performers but also extremely talented singers and dancers. Plus the songs (and their lyrics) are catchy, clever, and encompass a wide range of genres.
Equally impressively, the production very creatively uses the small space and limited props to add even more fun and silliness to the show. Just when you’re wondering how they will make a certain scene come to life, they do it in the most unexpected and comedic way possible. It will keep you guessing up until the very end!
Warning: the show is full of crude language as well as sexual references, some (comedic) depictions of mild violence, loud sounds and music and references to drug use. It is rated MA15+ so may be fine for older teens with parental supervision, but is best suited for 18+.
