Canteen Barossa is a beautifully renovated old school house that is playful, fun and family friendly.

Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji

If you are the sort of person that enjoys places with a bit of history, a whole lot of charm and plenty of space for kids to run and play, Canteen has your name all over it! Set inside an old schoolhouse in the country town of Marananga is a multi purpose space that houses Staguni (a farmhouse style restaurant), Goldie pottery studio, New Wave Wines, The Hidden Flower Farm and of course, Canteen.

Canteen is a family friendly café with the tag line “where nostalgia meets gourmet”. This can be seen in their menu which includes reimagined Australian classics such as elevated toasties, artisan sausage rolls, pikelets and more. This can also be seen in the impeccable renovation of the old schoolhouse which features a nod to its past through school bus shaped cookies, the opening times written on brown paper lunch order bags and the outdoor play space.

Walking into this space you instantly feel relaxed and welcomed. There are so many lovely little nooks to sit its hard to choose where to best place yourself. The inside is fully air-conditioned and houses a lovely little retail space as well as multiple wooden tables and chairs set up for small parties and groups. There are flowers in vases dotted throughout the café which are sourced from the flower farm at the back of the property. There is a cabinet full of tempting baked treats and the menu is displayed on an old blackboard at the back of the café against old school lockers that have been repurposed.

Moving outside there is a big beautiful deck with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, a huge lawn area for ball play and a swing set and monkey bars to entertain the kids. They also supply bean bags, picnic blankets and balls.

Last but not least they offer barista coffee from Segafredo, local wine from New Wave Wines and they make a mean iced matcha with mulberry syrup that is a must try.

So the next time you visit the Barossa Valley make sure a visit to Canteen Barossa is on your itinerary!

What we like about it:

So many things! The delicious food, relaxed vibes, ample space for kids to run and play and the cute little reminders filtered throughout the space of its past use as a schoolhouse.

Things to consider

  • this place is dog friendly, so feel free to bring your four legged friend
  • If your kids are wanting to play ball and not get annoyed by bark chips in their shoes it might be a good idea for them to wear closed toe shoes
  • At the moment there isn’t change facilities in the toilets but this is something that they are looking at, these is also ample space on the lawns to roll out a change mat
  • don’t forget to slip slop slap as the play areas aren’t shaded
