Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji
Losing a loved one is never easy. It’s hard to come to terms with the loss, ride the rollercoaster of emotions and navigate this new state of normal. Dealing with grief is hard no matter your age, life stage or family situation. Parenting through pain brings with it an extra layer of hardship as not only do you need to come to terms with your feelings you need to tune into your child’s emotions and support them through the hurdle too.
As a mother who has recently lost her own mother, this situation is very raw and real for me. Its sad to loose a loved one and its even sadder seeing your children experience the sadness of losing a grandparent and someone so significant in their life.
Whilst I can’t claim to have all the answers because frankly I don’t, I’m in the messy middle right now and things feel heavy and hard. However, thanks to a dear friend, something I can offer and recommend is a beautiful kids book called “The Invisible String”. This book was gifted to my daughters recently and it was not only a thoughtful gesture but a great resource to explain and instigate conversations surrounding connection, love, loss and grief.
Just as the title suggests, the book speaks about the premise of an invisible string that connects you with loved ones near and far, even in places such as heaven. It’s a beautiful story for children experiencing separation anxiety, life transitions, hospitalisation, travel and even the loss of a loved one.
For our family we found the book to be heart warming, sweet and a nice way of opening up conversations about hard topics in a light hearted way. We were so impressed by the book we decided to look it up online and it turns out that it is a very popular read and often spoken about in parenting circles, shared amongst community organisations and recommended by social workers!
So if you are going through a challenging time and are looking for a resource to provide comfort to your kids, this is a great choice. This book also makes a really nice gift for a family when you want to show your support but words and gifts fall short.
We enjoyed curling up at night and reading this together and reflecting on the beautiful message that we are always connected to those that we love despite the distance.
