Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji

South Australia’s Riverland is a beautiful destination for families. It boasts wide open spaces, low-cost activities, delicious fresh produce, a slower pace and so many attractions based around the Murray River. We fell in love with this part of South Australia almost instantly, and as soon as we stepped aboard this café, it felt like all of these elements had come together in a cute, café-sized package!

The Fruit Packer’s Daughters Café is located in Loxton, right on the river and aboard the Murray River Queen. The café has indoor and outdoor seating, as well as spaces on both the upper and lower levels. Inside, it’s beautifully decorated with eye-catching fruit-themed wallpaper and tables with bright orange chairs. Outside, there’s a beautiful mural and lovely river views, creating a tranquil space and the perfect backdrop for your meal, coffee or cool drink.

The café serves locally roasted coffee, house-made menu items and so many delicious sweet treats. During our visit, we enjoyed the haloumi and sweet potato fritters, which were SO good! We also had coffee, cool drinks and scones with jam and cream. The kids enjoyed the onsite Gelista gelati, which even uses local Riverland ingredients.

We loved visiting this spot as a family because the menu had a bunch of kid-friendly options, including scones, banana bread and gourmet sausage rolls. The staff were accommodating with high chairs, and being aboard a paddle-wheeler added an extra element of excitement. The café’s location is great, too, with a large lawn area out the front for kids to run around on. It’s also right next to a pump track.

What we liked about it:

  • we loved that it was housed on a paddle boat, we loved the river views, bright decor and the food and drinks were delicious.

Things to consider:

  • This cafe has a small menu but can cater to plant based diners and gluten free diners.
  • There are baby change facilities in one of the toilets and the cafe can also be accessed with a pram.
  • Families are welcome to take in toys or play mats and set themselves up in the indoor space.
  • High chairs are available.
  • The lovely owner Donna is also going to be offering lawn games for families to enjoy on the riverbank with items such as jenga, she has just ordered them so watch this space!
