A bush dance like no other… A Bridgewater bush bash!
It goes back a long way in the Hills you know. A place to kick up your heels. It started from when the Hills were wild and the legend of the Tiersmen was made. Runaway sailors, rustlers, convicts freed or fleeing, bullockies, even bushrangers – a motley bunch carving a life in the stringy bark forests of the Tiers. The ramshackle pub called The Rural Deanery became infamous for its wild good times. Then came the Bridgewater Inn, a favourite for locals and the ragged bunch of railway navvies. A place for untidy jigging.
There was also the old flour mill. No, not the one you’re thinking of, an even older one. They called it the Lion. It stood up the road from the pub, near the old garage on the corner. When Dunn’s mill with the water wheel started they shut the Lion mill down. But up in Bridgewater and around the Tiers they never missed an opportunity for a good time. What better place for letting off steam than an abandoned steam mill. And no better way to get to know fellow hills folk than by flinging them around the old timber floor – boards polished by years of hand-hauled hessian. A local band belting out a tune. A crowd in from across the Tiers. The dance nights became legendary. They kept it up until the old Lion Mill could take no more. Until it all just had to stop.
Well, it’s 150 years later and it’s back. Even bigger. Those rowdy dance nights have returned to the Bridgewater bush. People of the Tiers…..get jiggy again!
