Look up to the skies to see the Supermoon on Monday evening, 14 November 2016.
We will be closest to the moon in 68 years – the last time we were this close was 1948.
It’s a phenomenon called a Supermoon and it happens when a full moon or new moon happens at the same time the moon is the closest distance to Earth – also called perigee-syzygy . It will mean the moon will appear much brighter and larger than normal in the sky. We can expect it to appear up to 14% bigger and up to 30% brighter than usual.
The moon’s distance from earth at any point varies considerably. According to NASA, the Moon’s average distance from Earth is roughly 385,000km. At around 10pm South Australian time the moon will be approximately 356,500kms away from earth.
We’re particularly lucky this year, as there was a Supermoon in October and the phenomenon will happen again on 14 December 206, although the moon won’t be as close or appear as big as what we will see on Monday. In fact, after this Supermoon, it will not come this close to Earth again until 26 November 2034, when its distance will be 356,472km – 64km closer than Monday’s Supermoon.
