Like it or Loop It | Review

Adam Page has a face that radiates joy and a genuine love for what he does, that is instantly likeable. A brilliant muso, you’d at first be mistaken that he’s just got a few toilet gags up his sleeve (especially from the promo image above), but his talents go much further.
The ‘loop’ part of the title is all about recording sounds and repeating them back, and Adam made use of a range of every day objects such as apples being crunched into the microphone, water being gargled, a spoon banging a bowl, even the toilet brush beating it’s holder, to build techno symphonies that had us all grooving in our seats and just a little spellbound.
His feet tap-danced around the buttons and pedals on the recording machine on the floor as he also beat-boxed into the microphone, or had volunteers repeat the nonsense sounds he requested of them, to form incredible spontaneous compositions!
Sometimes he just made ‘songs’ from the full name of kids in the audience, so for 2 minutes that child was the star of a rave!
All of this was set in the scene of a day in the life of Adam the student – waking up and going to school. There was occasional storyline to tie it all in together and some intentionally low-budget costume changes which saw him (only slightly) transforming into Mrs Teacher, and Mr Science Teacher, and then back to Adam. There’s a constant feeling of improvisation though, too, and ‘mistakes’ are incorporated brilliantly, like unexpected squeaks in a recording which then loops repeatedly, and is fully embraced by Adam with humour.
Look for the amazing veggie-phone he creates too, out of a zucchini!
I really recommend this show for lovers of music – whether it be electronic and just generally – or just kids who love a laugh. Adults seemed to be moving in their seats even more than the kids so it was truly an all ages enjoyable experience.
My 11 year old said “I thought it was really interesting and unique, and I loved the different sounds he made” and it was also enjoyed by my 5 and 10 year olds.
