Adelaide French Festival 2019
The Adelaide French Festival is a celebration of life, summer and the best of French culture over one weekend. The program features an eclectic program of music, theatre, dance, food, wine, art, fashion, film and family activities including a number of Australian exclusive performances just for Adelaide.
The three-day celebration runs from 11-13 January 2019 and features some of the very best artists from France with something for everyone, from francophiles to those just discovering all that French culture has to offer. Presented by the Adelaide Festival Centre, events will be held in the Adelaide Festival Centre, around the riverbank and various locations around Adelaide.
Highlights include:
Breton chef Nathalie Beavuais from Le Jardin Gourmand will create an authentic French seafood dinner showcasing the flavours of Brittany exclusively for the festival.
Sonic Seasoning – Adelaide’s Zephyr Quartet will team up with The Smelly Cheese Shop for a sensory experience, pairing cheese, wine and music to explore if melody can enhance taste, in an intimate setting on the Dunstan Playhouse stage.
Breton fashion designer Pascal Jaouen presents his stunning embroidery collections for the first time in Australia, detailing the patterns and motifs of his native Brittany in an exhibition especially for the Adelaide French Festival.
Australian exclusive contemporary photographic exhibition by French artist Charles Freger featuring the changing face of women across generations, wearing the costumes and headdresses of the region of Brittany.
Riverdeck Hub
Browse market stalls showcasing French inspired artisan wares, sample the taste of France with gourmet food and wine, or relax with an apéritif and enjoy great music on the outdoor stage.

A French Affair | Presented by Adelaide Festival Centre
Enjoy the best of French culture at the historic estate of Carrick Hill, just 15 minutes from the city. Tour the House Museum, taking in the French items of the collection. Enjoy French-influenced food offerings and guest talks, or relax with music and pétanque in the lush surroundings of the grounds and gardens.

French illusionist and film director Georges Méliès was a pioneer of special effects at the turn of the twentieth century. Astounding, joyous and often surreal, Méliès’ short films revolutionised the early days of cinema through his whimsical approach and development of new techniques.
Following a sold-out premiere performance at the 2018 Adelaide French Festival, join The Zeitgeist Orchestra, innovative drummer Jarrad Payne and jazz violinist Julian Ferraretto as they curate individual musical responses to a selection of Méliès’ films.
Join these talented musicians as they present original compositions that celebrate the spectacular nature of Méliès’ works.

Discovering Brittany
Presented in conjunction with the South Australian French Teachers Association and French Adelaide schools, this is an exhibition showcasing a selection of artworks created by South Australian primary school students, exploring the seaside connection between Adelaide and Brittany.
This year, Adelaide French Festival will also offer audiences the chance to win a trip to Brittany to continue to indulge in all the beautiful region has to offer. Details will be announced later.

From trash to twirling treasure, ordinary plastic bags are brought to life by a mysterious ballet master, dancing on currents of air. A pirouetting solo is followed by a tender and comic pas de deux until a full corps de ballet fills the air, drifting and swirling to the gorgeous sounds of Debussy.

A wolf goes on a strange and important mission and an unusual prince controls night and day. Lumières! is a series of short films, accompanied by a live soundtrack performed by French artist Ellie James.
Venture into a world of dreams and imagination with a soundtrack influenced by the sunny pop of The Beatles and the indie-folk of Sufjan Stevens. Surrounded by keyboards, glockenspiel and melodica, and armed with her angelic voice, Ellie will surprise and intrigue as she brings to life a rich cinematic experience.

Mystérieuses Coiffures
Presented in conjunction with the South Australian French Teachers Association and French Adelaide schools
Haute couture becomes ‘haute coiffure’ with a visit from French hair sculptor extraordinaire Christophe Pavia. Witness this French hair wizard as he adorns selected members of the audience with ribbons, butterflies, birds and other unusual accessories for bespoke coiffure.
The result? Extravagant, utterly outrageous and completely original.

Picasso | The Vollard Suite | Presented by Adelaide Festival Centre
The Vollard Suite is Pablo Picasso’s most celebrated series of etchings. Comprised of 100 works and produced between 1930 and 1937, the suite represents a critical point in Picasso’s career and contains many of the abiding themes in his work, including his self-representation as the minotaur.
The Suite was made in Paris at the Château de Boisgeloup – a country property near Paris acquired by him in 1930. The film Blood of a Poet (1930) by Picasso’s friend and collaborator, Jean Cocteau, will be screened alongside the exhibition.
