Adelaide Roller Derby 2023 Season

Adelaide Roller Derby (ADRD) returns to the Adelaide Showground in 2023.

This year the ADRD will kick off the epic 2023 season early on Saturday 18 March 2023 with the first doubleheader being a part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival. The Wild Hearses take on the Good Ship Salty, before reigning champions of the past five seasons the Mile Die Club clash with last year’s ferocious contenders, Road Train Rollers. The Good Ship Salty is the new official name of the Salty Dolls, with the team changing the name to be more reflective of the gender diversity of the team/league.

This year’s sharp-witted commentators are, the Lil’ Commie Bastards, including Count de Bumps, Psycho Fox and Finger Prince. Bout Village will be bustling with locally made goods and delicious food and drink offerings.

Take your own seating and settle in for a night of entertainment, complete with live performances by talented local musicians and exclusive merchandise from ADRD.

Roller Derby is a grassroots sport and global movement that promotes individual empowerment, community building, and positive change.

About Roller Derby:

The Adelaide league is split into four home teams: Wild Hearses, Good Ship Salty, Mile Die Club and Road Train Rollers. These teams are supported by Team Zebra, the referee and official crew.

Roller Derby (pronounced like Furby) is a full contact sport played according to the international Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rules. The sport operates on a DIY ethos – everything is done by the members from training plans, to event management and publicity to making merchandise.

The game is played on an oval track, on concrete, wooden or sports courts, with each team comprising of 15 players. Five players from each team take to the track for each “jam”, which can last for up to two minutes. Offense and defense are played simultaneously, with one skater from each team, the “jammer” (they’re the one with a star on their helmet), scoring a point for each member of the opposing team on their second and subsequent laps. The other four members from each team form packs of “blockers”, who assist their jammer whilst aiming to stop the other team’s jammer from making a scoring pass.
