Attic | Adelaide Fringe 2018 Review

by Catherine Leo

Local circus company Outside the Lines bring their new show ‘Attic’ to the Tandanya Theatre this year.

With a passionate cast who clearly love what they do, the setting is an attic of objects gathering dust – boxes, books, a cupboard, ladders, a hat stand – new props in my eyes, to include in a circus show, and I loved how they utilised these items in their choreography – storytelling with their tricks.

The show was entertaining from start to finish, with even the ‘in between’ moments when dust needed to be swept off the stage, providing us with a giggle. There were marvelous bright and highly active routines involving hoops, tumbles and leaps!

There was light and shade though and one of the highlights for me was the slow and quiet routine involving the suitcases and boxes (pictured below), and incredible strength to flow through handstand poses. Amazing! I’ll also note the sound of ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley being sung by one of the performers made it all the more mesmerising. The trapeze performer was equally strong and bendable! Stunning.

The teeter board performance was also mind-blowing – with outstanding acrobatics high in the sky, then landing back on a seesaw, to lift the other performer into the air. I’ve not seen this before and I feel this sort of manoeuvre was hard to top!

I thoroughly recommend this show to families and I can name lots of little back-flippers in my life who would benefit from seeing where they could take these sort of skills into performance. I adore the Fringe Festival for exposing me to these sorts of acts in Adelaide. Outside the Lines will give you their absolute all for the full 60 minutes!
