A magical day at Carclew Castle, courtesy of Once Upon a Princess

Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji

It’s not every day that little girls get to dress up as their favourite fairytale princesses, explore a magical castle and meet the characters they love. But that’s exactly how we spent our Sunday, thanks to Once Upon a Princess!

carclew castle princess day

Located at the incredible heritage-listed Carclew Castle in North Adelaide, Princess Day at the Castle was certainly a day to remember. We arrived on a drizzly Sunday afternoon and joined a line of excited little princesses eager to get inside.

At the gate, we were given a little gift bag before walking beneath a flower-adorned arch and along the red carpet. There, we met the lovely Tinkerbell, who welcomed us with a cuddle and a photo. The excitement was already building as we stood at the castle entrance, catching glimpses of the princesses through the windows.

Before long, our lovely host, Nadia, welcomed everyone and talked us through the day’s activities before introducing the princesses. One by one, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Jasmine, Elsa and Anna, Moana, Ariel and Belle appeared, to squeals and smiles from the children. Each princess performed an individual dance, followed by a group dance. Afterwards, they spread out around the property so guests could meet them.

We made our way inside first to meet Cinderella, Belle and Sleeping Beauty. Each princess was so lovely and really tuned in to the children, never rushing them. They took time to chat, pose for photos and give each child a little gift to take home.

The whole setup was so well done. Near Cinderella was a sparkling glass slipper in a display case; Sleeping Beauty was surrounded by pink flowers and lanterns; and Belle had a tea set complete with Chip and Mrs Potts, plus a glass-encased red rose beside the piano. It honestly felt like stepping into a fairytale!

Outside, we met Rapunzel, Jasmine, Snow White, Ariel, Elsa and Anna. Beyond the princess meet-and-greets, we enjoyed a ride on the safari train, a jump on the bouncy castle and a visit to the Royal Nail Station. We were also treated to warm coffee, cinnamon doughnuts and pink fairy floss on a stick.

For animal lovers, the petting zoo was a special highlight. The girls had the chance to hold a cute guinea pig and get up close to a range of other animals. We also loved patting the royal unicorn ponies, dressed with pink flowers.

We visited on a wet, windy and wild day, and although the sunshine was absent, we still had the best time and made memories to last a lifetime. We can see why Once Upon a Princess events sell out time and again, and we’d jump at the chance to return.

What we liked about it:

  • Everything, it was magical and such a fun mother-daughter experience
  • We loved that this experience was so interactive, that it included food and drinks, that you had the chance to spend a day inside and outside of a castle, dress up, meet princesses and the level of detail that went into making this event what it was

Things to consider:

  • These events always sell out so book in early to avoid missing out

Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:

  • This event was in North Adelaide so you are spoilt for choice with food and drinks but we didn’t need it as they provided coffee, ice cream and donuts

Location:

Kaurna Country, 11 Jeffcott St, North Adelaide SA 5006
