Aussie Backyard Bird Count | 20-26 Oct 2025

Get ready to join Australia’s biggest birdwatching and citizen science event this October. Whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher or just starting out, this is your chance to connect with nature in a fun and easy way.

Birds are everywhere. In our backyards, balconies, local parks and schoolyards, and they have amazing stories to tell about the health of our environment. Right now, one in six Australian birds faces the threat of extinction, making it more important than ever to pay attention.

The Aussie Bird Count is a fun, easy way for all of us to take a national snapshot of the birds we see and start noticing the nature around us. With just 20 minutes, you can help build a picture of how our feathered friends are faring and contribute to something that really counts.

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is one of Australia’s biggest citizen science events. This year is the twelfth count, and the organisers are hoping it will be the biggest yet. Join thousands of people around the country in exploring your backyard, local park or favourite outdoor space and help us learn more about the birds that live where people live.

Birdlife Australia’s Aussie Backyard Bird Count will run from 20‒26 October 2025 during National Bird Week.

The #AussieBirdCount is a great way to connect with the birds in your backyard no matter where your backyard happens to be — a suburban backyard, a local park, a patch of forest, down by the beach, or the main street of town.

How to get involved:

Just spend 20 minutes in your favourite outdoor space and report about the birds you see during that period. It’s a great activity to do with the kids.  You can submit your results using the app or the web form. Every count helps.

You can count as many times as you like over the week. It is only requested that each count is completed over a 20-minute period. The data collected assists BirdLife Australia in understanding more about the birds that live where people live.
