Balloonatics | Adelaide Fringe 2017 | Review
Set in “The Bunka” of the Austral Hotel, this show is slightly on the ‘fringes’. The “Bunka” is a great little room, perfect for this funny show featuring the effervescent and very likeable comedian Chris Henry, complete with kilt and fantastic Scottish accent! Henry is witty and funny and has a great way of making the audience laugh without really making fun of anyone. There were a few ‘adult’ jokes thrown in which would have completely wooshed past the heads of the younger members of the audience.
The motto of the show is ‘you don’t have to be good at something for it to be fun’. If you are looking for Henry to take a balloon and turn it into a replica of the Taj Mahal you will be disappointed. Rather, he refuses to be taken seriously and instead grabs a balloon and furiously twists it into ….. a worm!
This is a really interactive show but it took a bit of coaxing to get the youngsters on stage. Finally when they did, using balloons, Henry transformed them into a combination of TV characters such as Sponge-Bob Squarepants, Minions and Star Wars characters set to theme music. Even the adults were beckoned on stage to strike a pose as mutant Ninja Turtle characters complete with balloon weapons and green face paint!
Henry is a one-man show but has enough charisma to keep people entertained with his zealous nature! This is a fun, self-proclaimed silly show about not taking things seriously using balloons to create a bit of fun. It was fun, it was silly and it was good for little kids but people after some serious balloon trickery may be disappointed.
