Beach Vigil for Marine Life | Glenelg & Brighton | 9 Aug 2025

The algal bloom is affecting many coastal areas in South Australia and the City of Holdfast Bay will hold a community beach vigil this August.

To acknowledge and commemorate all the marine animals that have died as a result of the harmful algal bloom, Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson is encouraging the community to get together at the Beach Vigil for Marine Life on Saturday 9 August 2025.

This community-led event will be held at both Glenelg and Brighton beaches, near the jetties, at 5.30pm and people are encouraged to take with them a candle in a jar to light up the beaches as part of the commemoration.

Algal Bloom Information

For information on the devastating algal bloom the South Australian government has set up a web page to help the community stay informed, stay safe and understand how the situation is being managed.

The page has information such as the potential effects of algal bloom, current impacted areas, the role of the newly established Harmful Algal Bloom Taskforce, what seafood is safe to eat and how to report marine animal deaths.
