The Birds and the Beats Adelaide Fringe 2018 Review
by Ali Moylan
Book the babysitter, gather some girlfriends or plan a date night out at the Fringe… Grant Busé, a Melbourne-based comedian, musician and teacher, is in Adelaide to fill in some blanks in our education with his sing-a-long Sex-Ed for Adults.
Brilliantly talented Busé’s razor-sharp wit and emotionally charged songs performed to an intimate gathering in Rajopolis at Raj House are somewhat reminiscent of the early careers of Sammy J or Eddie Perfect.
Live looping, beat boxing, impromptu comedy and audience interactions all prove his talent as a musician and performer but let’s talk about sex baby….
Let’s be clear, we’re talking about the nitty gritty in an intimate fringe venue… and there is audience interaction. If you’re uncomfortable with this, however much I would implore you to step outside your comfort zone, this may not be the show for you. However, we’ve all had “the talk” as kids and now as mums, dads or grandparents we are likely to be on the other side of it either now or in the near future – so read on….
This show is funny, hilarious in fact. My stomach muscles hurt from laughing. If you like a good pun – they’re a dime a dozen without growing tiresome, but what makes ‘The Birds and the Beats’ stand out is the genuine place from which the comedy comes and the important, potent message that underlies the theme.
“Hands up who remembers being explicitly taught about informed consent during their school sex-education?”
Wow, we have a problem.
Busé is on a mission to change the conversation, not just around consent but the way we approach sex education as an ongoing conversation. In the true test of a good Fringe show, the drive home to the hills was full of brilliant and topical conversation with my good friend and fellow school-mum.
The show is highly dependent on the audience feeling at ease to ask and answer questions, singalong and have a laugh at our own awkwardness around sex. Opening night had a great crowd and I feel Grant’s charm would win over most fringe-goers, but i’m sure he’s had more than a handful of cringe-worthy awkward moments on stage.
Grant Busé is a rising star. It won’t be long before we’re reminiscing about that time we saw comedy-gold being played out in a small room off Pirie Street. In Busé’s closing sentiments – a lot of the audience members are parents, future parents, or people who know a child… let’s not leave such huge gaps in their sex education as was left in ours. #consentissexy
The Birds and the Beats is playing at RAJOPOLIS at Raj House until 18 March 2018.
