Digital Abyss | Illuminate Adelaide 2026 | Review
Discover Digital Abyss, an immersive and interactive digital art exhibition at ILA, presented as part of Illuminate Adelaide 2026.
Digital Abyss invites you to step inside a mesmerising underwater world, inspired by microscopic marine life, where art meets technology. Giant LED screens display vibrant colours, swaying seaweed and a glimpse of the sea creatures that exist in the ocean’s depths. The atmospheric soundtrack enhances the experience, making you feel as if you’ve ventured beneath the ocean’s surface. It’s worth leaving the world outside behind while you’re visiting and fully immersing yourself in the experience.
If you’re curious about how this incredible exhibition was created, take a moment to learn about the artist and the process behind it. Miguel Chevalier, Illuminate Adelaide’s Luminary Artist-in-Residence, is considered a pioneer of immersive digital art. For more than 45 years, he’s been exploring the intersection of art and technology, using custom-designed software and generative AI algorithms as tools to create amazing immersive art exhibitions that invite audiences not only to view but to experience art.
Kids (and adults!) will love the interactive elements. Hidden sensors respond to your movements, transforming the colours, shapes and imagery on the screens around you. The soundscape also responds to movement, meaning that the whole exhibition is constantly evolving – each experience of the digital art exhibition is unique!
Another standout detail in this digital art exhibition is the range and intensity of colours. These vibrant colours reflect the custom-made technology that has created an incredible 16 million shades of colour!

What we like about
- Art coming to life through technology
- The colours are incredibly vibrant
- It’s interactive and immersive
- It’s an accessible exhibition
Things to consider
- At times, the room is a little dark and some small children might need reassurance
Chevalier has also created two installations for this year’s free City Lights display – Pixel Waves (Bonython Hall) and The Origin of the World (Government House). Find out more here.
