Adelaide Youth Theatre presents Frozen JR

Review by Jo Parkinson

Frozen JRs impressive display of young, local talent wowed audiences with a brilliant, high-quality production that deserves 5 stars!

Adelaide Youth Theatre recently staged the musical, Frozen JR, at Influencers Theatre in Paradise. Directed by Taylor Tran, the show was a condensed, one hour version based on the popular 2018 Broadway Disney Musical, Frozen.

Suitable for all ages, the audience packed out the large theatre and was thoroughly entertained from start to finish. From the very beginning the quality of talent, costuming and sets was evident.

The Story

For those (few!) who are unfamiliar with the story, Frozen JR tells a tale of two sisters, Elsa and Anna of Arendelle. They must overcome obstacles in their relationships and survive adventures, with the help of new friends, to find an act of true love. There is lots of singing and dancing, and enchanting characters such as Olaf the snowman and Kristoff and Sven the reindeer provide laughs along the way.

Frozen JR included all of our favourite songs from the movie such as “Do you want to build a snowman?” and “Let It Go” as well as new songs from the Broadway musical, “Dangerous to Dream” and the hilarious “Hygge”.

The Production

The cast, both lead and supporting were outstanding. Even though they were young, the whole performance was very professional and of a high standard. Microphones made spoken words clear, and the singing was excellent. We loved the detail and variety of the costumes. It was a surprise to see such quick changes too. Choreography by Alessia Charman was well done, and the dancers performed beautifully.

Sets were cleverly changed using screens and light projections. This was an effective and modern take on the painted wooden type of props we’ve seen in the past. The show ran without a hitch, so the backstage team should also be commended. We loved that the performance had two AUSLAN interpreters in the front corner of the audience, signing along for the whole performance to assist those with hearing impairments.

It was great to see the audience getting into the performance, cheering and clapping at the arrival of new characters, as well as during and after songs. This really boosted the atmosphere, as well as providing encouragement for the young performers.

Frozen JR was a magical show, and we highly recommend seeing Adelaide Youth Theatre’s productions in the future.

Congratulations to the entire team of Frozen JR for all your hard work and dedication, you should all be very proud!
