Fill the Earth | Illuminate Adelaide | 12-14 Jul 2024

Seven stories about how we fill the earth, our space & our lives.

A giant caterpillar giving birth to green balloons, a man negotiating a door, and a woman creating a garden from dead branches are just some of the stories created by the 12 artists included in seven works that complete Fill the Earth, a performance installation that brings together physical performance, visual art, dance and video.

Fill the Earth is a look into our tragicomic rituals, as we try to negotiate and understand the wider world in our private lives. The audience is invited to explore the ways in which we connect or disconnect, and ultimately fill the earth with our own stories.

Fill the Earth seeks to bridge the gap between the physical and the digital, between the past and the present, between the visible and the invisible.

Surrounded by ever changing imagery, the audience is gathered in an intimate space, witnessing and sharing the unfolding of cryptic scenes as a communal and meditative experience.

Play & Go Review

Fill the Earth offers an intriguing look into the ideas and lives of 12 different performers across seven scenes. The performers have been given creative license to communicate their ideas via performance, dance and video in an intimate theatre setting that is best suited to anyone who can watch with an open mind, curiosity and willingness to look past the apparent simplicity of each performance and delve deeper into what is being shared.

A woman dilgently sticky tapes apples onto dead branches while listening to news about bushfires in a vain attempt to bring life to that which has been destroyed.

A man carries a door around a stage, knocking, peeking underneath and attempting to make contact with anyone on the other side of it.

In the final scene, a man wrestles against being forced into becoming a robot soldier. His powerful performance incoporating “popping” dance techniques, combined with pulsing lights and a seething soundtrack conveys the struggle between those who seek to control and those trying to escape.

Of course, this is just my interpretation of the scenes that most resonated with me but maybe you’ll come away with something completely different.

This is certainly a unique Illuminate Adelaide offering that will appeal to those who are looking for a performance piece that challenges the concept of conventional storytelling.
