The Great Goolwa Cockle Challenge is coming to Goolwa Beach this summer.
You will have a chance to capture tagged pipis along the beach and win prizes, including fishing gear from South Coast Marine, a subscription to Fishing SA Magazine, drink vouchers and more, if you catch a tagged pipi on Saturday 6 January 2018.
The event, funded by a SA Recreational Fishing Grant, aims to promote this iconic species by engaging recreational fishers and the wider community as citizen scientists to find tagged pipis and learn more about the ecology and management of this species and about associated animals such as local oystercatcher shorebirds.
As part of this project Aquatic Ecologists from Aquasave – NGT are currently tagging pipis from along the coast from Middleton to the Murray Mouth to look at movement and abundance patterns.
As the pipi fishing season has just opened, if any recreational fishers find a tagged pipi could they please SMS or call Dr Sylvia Zukowski on 0438 815 489 or email Sylvia.zukowski@aquasave.com.au with details about the catch time and place.
