When was the last time you danced your way through the streets of the city? If it’s been more than a week (a year? a decade? longer?) then get yourself tickets to Guru Dudu’s Silent Disco Walking Tour immediately.
We met our lycra-clad tour guide, Guru Dudu himself, at the sacred site of where disco first landed in Adelaide – The Malls Balls. We slipped on our disco headphones (provided) and set off on a guided tour of the surrounding streets. With music in our ears that only our disco-family could hear, along with Guru Dudu’s quirky commentary and disco-dancing guidance I was reminded of my favourite quote from Friedrich Nietzsche:
“and those who were seen dancing, were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music”
The thought of dancing and singing through the bustling of Adelaide at Fringe time would make most people at least a little anxious and self conscious. Here’s the thing though, with music in your ears and a group around you sharing the experience, it’s alarming how quick anxiety disappears and gives way to the moment.
What started as a very small group of us quickly gathered momentum as unsuspecting bystanders were treated to spare headphones and joined us on the tour. It’s definitely the case that confidence grows in numbers, the more people who joined us the more immersive the experience became.
Our tour started at 8pm which gave us the added night time experience of dancing our way along to North Terrace to view, no interact with, The Parade of Lights. It’s incredible how much an experience can be altered with the addition of music. The simulation of the Northern Lights in front of the South Australian Museum, for us, was completely transformed from the calm, ethereal atmosphere that other fringe-goers were enjoying to an exciting celebration of culture and mother nature combined.
Along the way we serenaded people out for dinner, danced with and for the people of Adelaide, smiled, sang, laughed our way through the streets all the way to Gluttony where we welcomed people to the garden with a disco guard of honour… of which they could not hear (other than our, no-doubt, excellent singing).
Whether you’re out for an immersive Fringe experience with the kids, date night, girls night out or out alone this is a feel-super-good event that will have everyone grinning from ear to ear. With a variety of time slots throughout the festival – day time, evening or night there’s a spot to suit every bedtime.
Guru Dudu’s Silent Disco Walking Tour is a gem of the Fringe Festival, put aside your doubts, put on your dancing shoes (comfortable flats – you’ll be dancing for a full 90 minutes) and do something different this Fringe.
Guru Dudu’s Silent Disco Walking Tour will be spreading happiness around the streets of Adelaide throughout the entire Fringe Festival.
