Put your happy memories on paper and in a jar
This is our Happiness Memory Jar. I write down funny things the kids say, or memorable things that happen, along with the date, and put it in the jar. We’ve had it for many years.
The kids walk past it many times every day but have never really noticed it, until one night recently. We emptied all the bits of paper and read them out one by one. We laughed ’til we cried with tears streaming down our faces at all the funny things that we had forgotten about.
The trick is to write things down straight away. You won’t remember them otherwise. I write them on any scrap piece of paper I can find wherever I am – if out somewhere I use a receipt from my wallet. It doesn’t matter what you write on, as long as you write it down. And don’t forget to write the date and/or the age of your child at the time. Just scribble it down quickly before you forget.
It doesn’t have to be just about the kids – write down any funny things by any member of the family – grandparents can say and do hilarious things for example, and it’s nice to have these memories recorded to look back on one day.
Some people do variations of this. You could write down things that you are grateful for.
‘Pick Me Up’ Jar
We recently did a ‘Pick Me Up Jar’ in our office. Each person had a jar. Everyone in the office wrote something nice about each person on a slip of paper and put it in their jar.
Everyone had a jar full of lovely notes which we could read anytime we needed a little pick me up. It was a wonderful thing to do. These jars were $1 from Kmart but you could recycle a jam jar or similar.
Maybe you could do this at home for each family member. Or fill up a jar over the course of a year for each child every time you notice the child doing something kind or write about proud moments. You could give it to them on their birthday or Christmas as a special gift.
