How to Make Your Child Feel Special on their Birthday

We love Birthdays! They are a celebration of life and an important reminder of how lucky we are to be another year older. We love to make the Birthday boy or girl feel special on their important day, which has been keenly anticipated for…well, a whole year!

Yes, most kids like getting presents, but it’s the whole excitement of having a special day to celebrate, which is so much fun.

Here are some of the things we’ve done to make the day special. They’re cheap to do and not very difficult, but bring a few laughs and a lot of happiness to the day.

Balloon Surprise

We filled the pantry with balloons the night before. When we asked the Birthday boy to check the pantry in the morning he was greeted with coloured balloons falling out at him.

Birthday Pancakes

On the morning of each child’s Birthday, we have pancakes and they are always made into the number of their Birthday and the first letter of their name.

Beep for the Birthday Child

We asked people to ‘Beep’ for the Birthday child. I got a thick chalk marker from Officeworks and wrote on the car windows (back and sides) the night before, so it was a surprise when they got to the car in the morning. As the Birthday boy is not in the car for very long each day, we kept the writing on the car for the week. He was thrilled each time he got a Beep! Thank you to everyone who ‘Beeped’ – it was so much fun!

Birthday Candles

You don’t always need a Birthday cake to celebrate. We often put some Birthday candles in a serve of ice cream to sing ‘Happy Birthday’. In fact you can put Birthday candles into anything and it’s suddenly special. Another one of my kids’ favourite is the Chocolate Bavarian ice cream cake by Sara Lee (from your supermarket frozen section). Just add Birthday candles and everyone is happy.

Birthday Countdown Clock

Does your child ask constantly how many days it is until their Birthday? This Birthday countdown clock is brilliant – it was given to the kids as a gift a couple of years ago. An alternative is you could use a little blackboard or magnetic board and write the countdown to the big day.

The balloon surprise idea and the car ‘Beep’ idea we got from the Blog, The House of Hendrix – 20 ways to fill your child’s love tank on their Birthday. A friend sent this to me a while ago and I couldn’t wait to try some of them out. There are some fabulous ideas there.

Have fun making your Birthday child feel special – they are only little for a short time. Make some lovely memories for them to remember.
