Attrape Moi! (Catch Me) | Adelaide Fringe Review

Peacock Tent | Gluttony – Corner Rundle Street & East Terrace, Adelaide

If you are looking for one show to take the family to, then Attrape Moi! fits the bill for the perfect Fringe experience. It has everything that epitomises the Fringe – circus, acrobatics, dance, tricks, theatre, comedy, a little bit of kookiness and a whole lot of sass, all rolled into one great package that entertains all ages.

Attrape Moi! (Catch Me) is so much more than just a circus, it’s a story of friendship and fun with a bit of sweet nostalgia. Six friends reunite after years apart. The tricks are clever but when combined with great choreography and timing, plus great music, it makes this theatrical performance a notch above the rest. There are slower melodic sections with graceful aerial hoop and rope performances. And then there are the high energy boppy sequences with a lot of fun thrown in, like an ice block eating competition and a beach party with giant beach balls to Copacabana. There’s a novel way to use sleeping bags too. Kids especially will love all these cute and fun aspects, with parts of the show speaking straight to the heart of a child.

The team is made up of 5 male and 1 female performer. Don’t be fooled by her small stature – though she be small, she is absolutely fierce in strength. Jade Dussault has amazing technique and  brings a wonderful elegance to the show.  The other solo aerial act is by Sebastian Afonso and it is amazing to watch him manoeuvre his body with strength and refinement. And don’t forget that their aerial work is all done without a safety harness.

The rest of the performers, Bruno Gagnon, Jérémie Arsenault, Jonathan Julien and Yann LeBlanc all show off their many talents in this very team oriented show. Dressed in casual clothes, all are unassuming in their abilities at first sight, but as the show goes on you will be wowed by them all. It may look like they are a group of friends playfully hanging out together having fun, but make no mistake, this stuff takes a lot of practise and precision.

If you find your kids dragging the trampoline against the wall of the house and pulling off the safety net, you can blame these guys for it. Their trampoline tricks are sensational and a highlight of the show.

As far as any scary factor, the very first scene does involve a storm – there is the sound of loud rain, thunder and lightning (created live, beatbox style, by one of the performers), so be prepared to cover little ears if they may be scared.

This is a totally family friendly show that will appeal to all ages. We took kids from 2 years to 12 years old and everyone enjoyed it. The little ones were captivated and easily sat through the whole thing. It goes for 75 minutes so you feel like it’s good value and not all over in a flash, but it’s not too long that the kids get squirmy.

Attrape Moi! Is bound to be a huge hit this Fringe season. It’s clever circus with theatre and fun, completely charming at times and has plenty of wow moments.
