Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema in Glenelg | Films Under the Stars | Review

Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema in Glenelg, an outdoor movie venue on the foreshore, has just opened for their Adelaide 2015 season.

Their program of films this season includes current Oscar winning films, family flicks and some old favourite classics thrown in.  The opening night on March 1st was a ‘Sundae Session’ and the film was rated M (therefore not suitable for the kids this time).  It was a fabulous night out in a setting that saw planes flying out over the horizon, apartment window lights glowing in the distance and the pleasant sound of waves rolling onto the sand.

The fenced off area offers everything you need for an enjoyable night.  There are bean lounges and deck chairs set out in rows and there are lawn areas to lay down your own picnic rug or low chair.  Bean lounges, deck chairs and blankets are all available at the venue for hire.  The food and drink tent has a great menu including scrumptious pizzas and salads and the bar has a good selection of non alcoholic drinks as well as beer, wine and ciders.

The Ben & Jerry’s Sundae Session is the pick of the week with live music before the film screens.  It will pay to get there early to secure a good spot as the seating is unreserved (except in the Star Lounge and Polo Class). There are fun lawn games for both adults and kids to play and win prizes – Pick A Patt and Giant Cow Jenga.  Best of all there is an icecream stand offering scoops of FREE Ben & Jerry’s – our flavour selection was a tough choice between Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Triple Caramel Chunk!

As the sun sets the temperature cools so be sure to bring along warm clothing, blankets and even a pillow and warm socks if you want to really snuggle up!  Unless it’s a very warm night, sitting down outside with a sea breeze for a prolonged period of time you start to feel the cold!

Once the sun sets the film gets underway.  The bar remains open so you can grab another drink if you want to.  The venue doesn’t allow BYO alcohol, but you are welcome to bring your own food and snacks.  They even allow dogs!  They must remain on a leash and be very well behaved!
