How to Make Playdough – Uncooked Playdough Recipe

This is an uncooked playdough recipe which is super easy to make.  My playdough recipe testers really enjoyed kneading the warm playdough mixture and said it was good playdough because it was soft and smooth and squishy. They also loved seeing the drops of food colouring gradually mix into the dough.

What you’ll need

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • food colouring

How to make playdough

Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl.

Put the boiling water in a jug and then add the food colouring and the cooking oil before pouring it onto the dry ingredients.

Mix it well and then turn it out onto a floured surface. Knead until the dough feels just right. If it’s a little sticky add a bit more flour.

Tips

  1. This recipe made enough playdough for three children. We split the playdough into three balls and everyone got to choose what colour playdough they wanted.
  2. A little food colouring goes a long, long way!
  3. For extra special playdough add some glitter.
  4. Homemade playdough in a ziplock bag makes a nice addition to a party bag.
