SASMEE Park Miniature Train Rides at Millswood
The South Australian Society of Model & Experimental Engineers (SASMEE) run miniature train rides in Adelaide at Millswood twice a month throughout the year.

This is a wonderful day out for families, especially for train lovers. All ages can ride on the trains – it’s just as popular with grandparents as it is with kids. There’s grassy areas for a picnic, and the pond is also popular for remote control boats. There are two stations within the park where you can catch the miniature steam trains. Your entry ticket gives you unlimited rides for the day so it’s great value entertainment. How many rides you get depends on how many people are there and how long the line-ups are. We managed to get 7 rides one afternoon when we visited.

The park is run by volunteers who maintain the park and the trains. Don’t forget to thank them when you get on and off the train rides – it’s a wonderful service they provide to the public. The park offers picnic tables and seating with plenty of shady trees and a canteen which sells a range of soft drinks, tea, coffee, ice cream and hot chips and hot dogs.

SASMEE is open on the first Sunday of every month and the third Saturday of every month.

Tips for train rides at SASMEE Park:
- To ride the trains you are required to wear enclosed shoes. This is non-negotiable for safety. Be sure to wear closed shoes so you are not disappointed.
- The steam engines emit sparks, soot & steam. Please note you may get dirty! Don’t wear your finest clothes and be aware that you will be straddling the seats when you ride so dresses and skirts may not be practical.
- Eftpos facilities are now available for entry fee, but the canteen is cash only. {There may be changes due to Coronavirus restrictions}
- Note that there are 2 stations and separate platforms where you can catch a train ride. The first one you come across takes you around the inner circuit close to the lake. If you walk a bit further along you’ll find the other station, and this one is often a bit quieter with shorter line ups. The trains from this platform take you around the outer circuit of the park and on the day we recently visited, the trains were longer ones with more carriages able to fit more people, therefore there was very little waiting time for a ride.
- In inclement weather (very hot or stormy) SASMEE may choose to not open. Please check website for information on those days. On days over 35 degrees SASMEE will not open.
- Accessibility: Much of the grounds are wheelchair accessible, and appropriate toilet facilities are provided. However, the trains are only small and operators may not be able to accommodate all needs.
Watch how the trains are filled with coal and and water is added to create steam to power them. If you have any questions about the trains feel free to ask the friendly volunteer train operators. They love to have a chat and welcome inquisitive minds.
The lovely volunteers at each station will also be able to help mind your bags. Backpacks will need to be left with them at the station so they don’t take up space on the trains. You can pick them up again after you return from your ride.
The canteen is just like an old style school tuckshop with reasonable prices for snacks and treats. Or you can bring your own food and drinks for a picnic. From the canteen tables you can wave to the trains going past and get a photo of your crew when they whizz past.
A visit to a miniature train park like SASMEE is a must-do activity with the kids at least once. It’s so much fun for the whole family and suits all ages. If SASMEE is not near you, there are train parks in other parts of Adelaide and regional towns.
