Inside the Walls: A Giant Pop-Up Book Ghost Story

Offering a change of pace and encouraging kids to use their imagination, Inside the Walls is a pop up story book brought to life with handmade puppets and creative story telling.

Staged in one of the smaller Gluttony venues, Ukiyo, this unique story book performance uses sound effects, video animation, mood lighting, puppetry and a very creative pop-up-book completely hand crafted by performer Theresa O’Connor.

Once the story begins, children will question what it is about and will need to be patient as the story unfolds, moving from scene to scene (page to page).  The main character is an only child, Issy,  who moves to an old ‘renovators delight’ house in the country with her parents.  The story is played out through the eyes of the young girl, detailing her daily adventures and make believe world without an electronic device in sight.  Soon the new home reveals an unexplained disappearance and Issy is forced to use her skills and bravery to solve the mystery.

Theresa greeted the audience at the end of the show and invited children to ask questions, some of which showed just how much the children had absorbed during the performance.  There were various interpretations of the story line and many were curious as to how Theresa managed to perform certain parts of the show.

Salt and Poppet Theatre is a bijou puppetry company based in Melbourne, Australia. Theresa O’Connor, Lead Artist at Salt and Poppet, created Inside the Walls during her Children’s Literature Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria, with added assistance from Creative Victoria and Auspicious Arts Projects.

Recommended for ages 6+years, there were quite a few younger children in the audience who appeared to enjoy the performance too, so a good age guide would be 4-10 year olds.

A note from the artist when booking tickets – Any younger please read this note from the Creators: We have had 2 year olds love it but also be scared by it. We use the following guide: if your child is afraid of things under the bed or loud noises in the dark of the night, perhaps it’s not for them. But then again, perhaps it may help them overcome these fears.
