Instant Family – Movie Review | In Cinemas 10 Jan 2019

Paramount Pictures presents Instant Family – In Cinemas 10 January 2019

Play & Go Movie Review

Instant Family is a heartwarming insight into the journey of foster care and adoption, based on the writer/director Sean Anders’ own real life experience with his wife.  It’s a look at the trials and tribulations of the many children and couples who enter the foster care system, but done in a fairly lighthearted way with plenty of comic relief.

There are some cheesy cliche moments, poking fun at a Christian couple and a single woman with their reasons for wanting to foster, but it also shows some very real experiences too and the stats about the number of children who are faced with this life will shock you.

There are touching moments that will pull at the heartstrings which you may need tissues for.  There’s also hope that the movie may entice people to consider being foster parents themselves.

Parents should know though that although it is a PG rating there is quite a bit of sailors’ language plus some sexual references – words such as “sh*t”; masturbation, “d*ck pic”, plus “f*ck” is used once. This is a shame as some of it seemed unnecessary and this made it unsuitable for younger kids and not so family friendly.

Spoiler alert, but one of the plot lines is about a creepy young pedophile and although you will probably cheer about what the Mum does to him, some people may not appreciate violence used.

Our whole family enjoyed the movie aged from 10 years to 86 years and thankfully some of the language went over some heads. We particularly liked the grandma in the film – she’s fabulous! Charming and sweet it’s a great feel-good movie for the Summer holidays.

Movie Info from Paramount:

When Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne) decide to start a family, they explore the world of adoption. When they meet a trio of siblings, including a rebellious 15-year-old girl (Isabela Moner), they find themselves unexpectedly speeding from zero to three kids overnight. Now, Pete and Ellie must hilariously try to learn the ropes of instant parenthood in the hopes of becoming a family.

Instant Family is inspired by the real events from the life of writer/director Sean Anders and also stars Octavia Spencer, Tig Notaro and Margo Martindale.
