Latitude 18+ ‘Big Kids Take Over’ | Aug 2018 | Review

Latitude Big Kids Takeover | Review

For anyone who has ever spent time sitting in the Latitude cafe wondering why the kids get to have all the fun – this one’s for you.

Getting ready for a Saturday night out without the kids usually involves a little bit of makeup, some fancy shoes and possibly some panadol on standby for the morning. Getting ready for the ‘big kids takeover’ at Latitude, however, was all about activewear, headbands, trainers and some Voltaren rapid on standby.

At 7pm the last of the kids finished up their sessions and left the building with confused looks on their faces as a mob of grownups eagerly lined up for their own Latitude socks.

Lights were turned down, music was turned up and a rush of childlike energy filled the room as negotiations were made amongst friends as to what to go on first.

Access all areas. Free Bounce, Sky Walk, Dodge Ball, Climbing, Balance Beam Fights – the place was ours for three whole hours.

Having watched the kids have a blast at Latitude it’s easy to think that there’s not much to it, but let’s make something clear – it’s harder than it looks…. and higher than it looks. The Sky Walk and climbing poles were slightly terrifying and once having committed it became apparent how hard it is to override a fear of falling despite knowing that you’re safely strapped in.

Watching a few pros on the trampolines flipping around like it’s the easiest thing in the world quickly proved otherwise with fits of laughter and uncoordinated bouncing from the less-experienced.

Similarly, with the climbing area, it turns out it’s not as easy as elegantly scooting up a wall.  Despite previous misconceptions, Latitude hasn’t made these activities easier and more accessible for kids – kids actually are that much better at it than us.

Throughout the night there were a few games and competitions for those who were after a challenge – gladiator beam wars, speed wall climbing and dodgeball against the state dodgeball team.

Meanwhile, the DJ kept the vibes high with some classic party tunes from the ‘90s and 00’s which all added to the brilliant atmosphere of the night.

A smorgasbord of party food was included and available from 8:30pm complete with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Two alcoholic drinks were included in the ticket with the clear understanding that once you’ve gone down that line your wristband will be cut off and wisely, you won’t be going back on the floor.

Shout out to the Latitude staff members who were as patient, helpful, fun and friendly with us “big kids” as they always are with the younger ones – never once laughing (too much) as they had to reassure another grownup to casually just step off of the high poles into thin air.

This was such a fun night out and brilliant value for the $30 price tag ($32 with socks).

I’ll be over here practicing my pelvic floor muscle exercises ready for the next ‘Big Kid Takeover’ at Latitude.
