Have some fun in the sun in January’s School Holiday Program at the South Australian Museum.

Relax on crash mats on the Museum lawns, handle collection items, splash in our rock pools and enjoy hands-on exploration of creatures from the Permian.

To cool off, venture inside to check out the exhibition Life Before Dinosaurs: The Permian Monsters, sing and dance along to performances, and explore life in the past with a self-guided fossil trail.

Life Before Dinosaurs: The Permian Monsters

Step back in time 290 million years when bizarre-looking animals dominated life on land and sea. Find out about the greatest extinction the world has ever seen!

This unique exhibition brings the past back to life with fossilised skeletons and full-size models of the animals that ruled the world millions of years before the dinosaurs.

Life Before Dinosaurs Touch Trolley

Experience a hands-on exploration of creatures from the Permian. Science Communicator Carey Burke demonstrates how palaeontologists interpret fossil material to uncover the stories of prehistoric times. Bring your mystery fossil specimens along for identification!

Valley of the Monsters with Professor Flint

Sing and dance with Professor Flint, the singing Scottish palaeontologist, and explore a world of prehistoric monsters!

Fossil Detectives: In Search of Monsters!

  • Best suited ages 5-12 years

Join fossil detectives Carey Burke and Professor Flint as they explore how palaeontologists discover the science behind the cool critters and magnificent monsters from millions of years ago.

  • Best suited ages 5-12 years

Follow the trail that takes you on a journey back in time through the Museum’s Ediacaran, Megafauna and Opal Fossil Galleries.
