Lucky Dumpling Market Review –  OzAsia Festival 2022

The Lucky Dumpling Market is back for 2022 with lots of family-friendly eats and drinks, and entertainment galore.

Review by Claire Davill

In addition to a wide variety of dumplings, there’s also noodles, bao, salads, curries and desserts on offer, from all over Asia. You’ll have the chance to sample food from Korea, Vietnam, India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Turkey.

Entry is from the riverbank walkway, on the northern side of the market. If you are approaching from King William Road, you’ll need to walk around the boundary fence to get to the entrance.

Once inside, there is plenty of space to spread out and find a spot to enjoy the food. There are tables under a marquee and picnic tables with umbrella shades, plus tables and chairs out in the sun. Down towards the eastern end of the market are several lounge chairs, perfect for stretching out and enjoying a drink or meal and taking in the view of the Torrens. Note these chairs are not shaded. This end of the market is quieter, away from the noise of the stage and closer to the toilets.

There are plenty of kid friendly options on offer – from dumplings to noodles, bao and sticky ribs – and refreshing fruit juices and smoothies too. Bring some wipes with you if you’re likely to sample the sticky options! There are hand washing facilities near the toilets.

There’s almost always something happening on the stage to watch or listen to. On weekends there are family-friendly workshops to keep the kids entertained as well. The market tends to be less busy earlier in the day, but later at night it looks spectacular with all the lanterns lit up.

Note that the venue is cashless – you will need a debit or credit card. Some items can be quite pricey, but there is a wide range of food to suit everyone’s budget.

Things to bring:

  • a debit or credit card, as all food, drink and merchandise purchases are via EFTPOS.
  • a refillable water bottle, to drink from the free water stations.
  • a picnic blanket – while there are plenty of tables and chairs, these are in high demand at peak times, but there is plenty of grass to sit on.
  • sun protection for during the day eg hats, shirts, sunscreen – while there are multiple shade structures (umbrellas over tables and a tent, Elder Park is in full sun during the day.
  • warm layers for the evenings – there is a cool breeze off the river.
  • It’s fenced all around but remember the river is nearby so keep an eye on kids.
  • Entry is FREE and bookings are not needed.
