Super Cooper’s Chance to Soar is a fundraising effort for a very special little Adelaide boy, Cooper, who was born premature at 28 weeks and as a result suffers from Spastic Diplega Cerebral Palsy.
In his young life Cooper has overcome a number of hurdles and he dreams of walking unaided, running around the school yard with his friends and playing football with his older brother, Jack. Cooper works very hard every day to carry out tasks the rest of us find easy to do. He cannot stand or walk independently but can walk using the aid of a walker and uses a wheelchair for long distances. He wears splints on his legs during the day to assist with his balance, tone and mobility and also wears them at night.
Cooper has regular Botox injections in his leg muscles and has periods of time in serial casting. He attends physical therapy sessions 4 times a week. But there is hope!
A surgical procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy Surgery (SDR) is available at the St Louis Children’s hospital in the USA. SDR is a spinal operation where Neurosurgeons would test, select and remove all the nerves from the spine causing Cooper’s spasticity and stiffness and could potentially help him take his first steps and make him much more comfortable in life. These specialised doctors and this hospital are the best in the world for effective treatment of Cerebral Palsy.
Fundraising is this family’s only chance to cover the costs of the operation, flights, accommodation and intensive post therapy that is required to make Cooper’s dream come true of not facing life in a wheelchair. They need as much help as possible to achieve a positive outcome and active future for Cooper, and to help make his dream of being able to walk independently a reality.
Despite his physical challenges Cooper is a happy, loving and bright boy! He is such a beautiful soul whose smile melts the hearts of us all and his determination along with hard work, time and the hope of SDR surgery we know he will make his dream a reality!
