Give a grown-up gift which actually means something this Christmas
If there’s one thing that 2020 has taught us, it’s that we need to be kinder to each other and everyone else on the planet. That includes putting more thought into our choices, including what we buy.
It’s about now that most people start panicking about the mountains of Christmas shopping they need to get through. Buying Christmas gifts for kids can be relatively easy, given all the toys, gadgets and fun stuff. In fact, there’s so much choice we usually tend to buy a lot more than we ever wanted to.
But it’s a different story when it comes to buying an adult gift. Choosing something for our spouse, friend, sister or mum is a lot harder. Particularly as most people already have everything they need. Cue the token cheap socks, booze and soap bought last minute from a chain store.
One way to make a difference and give something meaningful is a gift with purpose – aka one from a social enterprise.
“These businesses give a portion of profits back to a cause such as ending child poverty, anti-slavery or helping the disabled,” explains Vanessa Rowed, founder of social enterprise Awakind which produces Australian-made sleepwear and bedsheets for adults and kids in gender neutral colours.
It’s also a nice idea when your loved one opens your gift or comments on it, to explain why you chose it and what’s behind it.
