Melba’s Chocolates & Confectionery Barossa Valley | Review

Melba’s Chocolates & Confectionery at Angaston

Opening Friday 8 March 2024, Melba’s Chocolates has branched out to the Barossa Valley. The new store and cafe at Angaston, is a perfect place for families to stop for a picnic on the lawn, a bite to eat and drink, and to take in beautiful views across the vineyards.

Everything about this fabulous venue has been created with families in mind. There is an expansive lawn area with free giant games for everyone to play, shady trees and chairs and tables with umbrellas. The deck and lawns overlook the neighbouring vines, creating a really lovely spot to sit and relax while watching the kids play.

You’ll find plentiful parking onsite, plus ramps to accommodate prams and wheelchairs and a large deck overlooking the lawns where you can sit and enjoy a decadent hot chocolate, ice cream or savoury food. There are also toilets onsite.

The onsite cafe has very reasonably priced eating options, perfect for families. Locally produced South Australian food features strongly at Melba’s and Golden North Ice Cream is on the menu with a great range of ice cream flavours for everyone. Kids can make their own Ice Cream Bowl and choose from an eye popping array of lollies, chocolate sauce and toppings to add to their ice cream.

You can also make your own Fondue Bowl by buying a little cup of their delicious melted chocolate, then pick your lolly toppings for dipping into (currently $3 for cup of chocolate and $1 per topping as of March 2024). If you’re fond of other different toppings like fruit, you could always bring these along to dip into a cup of chocolate when you picnic outside.

Other South Australian manufacturers that feature in the store are F.C. Grubb who make their old style classic soft drink range in Gladstone and Mountain Fresh Fruit Juices in Mount Compass. Bakery items are locally made in the Barossa.

Milkshakes and Thickshakes are made the good old fashioned way with real Golden North ice cream – so good!

Melba’s trademark chocolate pots and hot chocolates are also available along with coffee, cheese platters, savoury and sweet food, and cold drinks. You’re also welcome to take your own picnic to enjoy on the lawns. For example, you could bring along a packed lunch of sandwiches or rolls and then treat yourselves to a chocolate dessert after.

The shop has lots of natural light, exposed beams and incorporates Melba’s homely rustic style which is so welcoming. Along the walls there are pictures and information about Melba’s history linking to their iconic Woodside chocolate factory.

If this chocolate fountain isn’t enough to make you want to indulge in some chocolate, we don’t know what is!

All of Melba’s classic chocolate and confectionery options which are sold at their Woodside store are available from this Barossa shop, so it will be hard to leave without taking home a treat or two!

Melba’s is an iconic family owned South Australian business (founded in 1981) and their new Barossa venue has been the product of plenty of hard work and personal touches. It’s been a labour of love for Tom, the Managing Director, who helped renovate the building, including painstakingly painting the raked ceiling with his Dad Graeme, all under the careful watch of Tom’s friendly dog Charlie, who you may meet when you visit. Charlie has spent many months supervising the renovation and is a little unhappy about not being allowed inside the building now that all the chocolates and lollies have arrived.

Please note that there will be fencing installed soon as a barrier between the lawns and the driveway. They have some other exciting things planned, including a licence to serve alcohol which seems very appropriate with so many great wineries nearby. So watch this space for more news.

We love that families are so well catered for, so we highly recommend a visit with your family and friends! It’s only 1 hour and 20 minutes drive from the city making it a great destination for a day trip.
