MJ McInerney Reserve at West Croydon – Review
by Carla Caruso
The play space at MJ McInerney Reserve in West Croydon opened in July 2019 and it’s a corker. Those out north-west, rejoice!
The revamped playground offers something for every age range, interest and season, and it’s all FREE … fun park fees not required.
You know that dilemma when you have friends with kids of different ages and can’t work out a meeting spot that’ll suit all? Well, this is your place. It has something for EVERYONE, and enough equipment that no one will miss out.

Upon entering the play space, we were greeted by a ‘mini’ slide and play area for the younger tots, with features including a scramble net, connect-four scoreboard, and spring rockers. Nearby is a massive sandpit with sand and water play equipment, which I can see being flat-out on sunshine-filled days.
Further afield, there are various swings, including a nest swing, and a merry-go-round. Then there’s a super-duper, ginormous double slide for the bigger kids, with ‘extras’ such as a rope bridge and rope climber. Another playground highlight for my two lads? The double flying fox!
The reserve (named after a former prisoner of war and local RSL president) also boasts sheltered picnic tables, barbecues, toilets, tennis courts, and a spacious grassed area. We spied some kids floss-dancing on the latter. I can imagine parties galore here in future.
There’s some temporary fencing as the City of Charles Sturt says more is still to be completed, including a skate park and basketball court. Yes, there’s yet MORE to come.
Anyhoo, make sure to pack some snacks for your playground date as the time is sure to fly by!
Why we love the Reserve
• The array of play equipment for all ages
• The brand-spanking newness of it all and pleasing colour palette
• Enough play equipment to go around, lessening squabbles
• Hip boutiques and cafes nearby, like Pineapple Vintage, for those keen to go for a meander later
Facilities
• Oodles of play equipment, from slides to swings, a seesaw, merry-go-round and double flying fox
• Sandpit
• Toilets
• Sheltered picnic tables
• Barbecues
• Water fountains
• Tennis courts
Things to Note
• No shade sails over the play equipment (yet).
• For those with a ‘runner’, the reserve is only partly fenced. The unfenced side, however, faces the grassed area and the adjacent road isn’t a main one.
• There is only street parking.
