Moss Piglet | Windmill Theatre Company | Review

Windmill Theatre Company’s Moss Piglet at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

Who knew microscopic creatures with eight legs could be so cute and funny? Moss Piglet is a charming, engaging show about tardigrades that will entertain and educate children and their adults.

Review By Claire Davill

Moss Piglet is a fantastic production from the Windmill Theatre Company and incorporates innovative puppetry, clever use of lighting and green screens, and a touch of humour and slapstick comedy. The result is a fun show for kids of all ages, and there’s plenty to engage adults too.

Two bumbling scientists explore whether a tardigrade (also known as a moss piglet, or water bear) is “safe” by deliberately, and sometimes unwittingly, exposing it to extreme environmental conditions. The poor tardigrade endures a hot dry desert, a volcano, icy conditions, the depths of the sea and even the moon. Every time the scientists think the environment has gotten the better of the tardigrade, it bounces back, despite being a creature that cannot jump, fly, or even move quickly.

Fun facts about this amazing little creature are learned while the performers expertly manipulate a range of puppets and props. As our eight year old reviewer kept saying, “the tardigrade is so cute!”.

The bumbling scientists are perfectly embodied by performers Gareth Davies and Dylan Miller, with Davies also donning an amazing tardigrade costume and somehow perfectly capturing tardigrade vocalisations (or what we would imaging a tardigrade sounds like if we could hear them).

The show is well paced and should keep children of all ages engaged and entertained. There’s the occasional joke and music choice that adults will appreciate too.

The smaller theatre area of the Space Theatre is perfect for a production like this, without being too large and overwhelming for children. Note that the show does contain some loud sounds, flashing lights and the use of a smoke machine. Those with sensory needs are encouraged to bring headphones if needed.

When attending the show, make sure you have time to check out the interactive display in the foyer before or after the performance. Children will have the chance to look at items through high powered microscopes, as well as view a filmed collage by students of Ocean View College and artists Emmaline Zanelli and Liam Sommerville.

Moss Piglet by Windmill Theatre Company is at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre until 20 October 2024.
