Murray Whispers – Adelaide Ballet | ILA | 15-17 Aug 2025

Adelaide Ballet

Adelaide Ballet is set to make its highly anticipated season debut at ILA this August with the Australian premiere of Murray Whispers, a breathtaking new production inspired by the mighty Murray River.

The performance will unfold in The Light Room at ILA, Adelaide’s Centre for Immersive Art and Light, which Adelaide Ballet now proudly calls home. Audiences will be surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Murray, with Thomas Oates and Scott Baskett’s stunning visuals displayed on ILA’s massive LED screens. On stage, Adelaide Ballet’s dancers will perform to an original score by acclaimed Australian pianist and composer Ashley Hribar, while wearing custom-made costumes designed by SA’s Kira Bayliss and crafted by Alice Ong.

Co-choreographed by Sarah Humeniuk and Rejane Garcia, Adelaide Ballet’s Co-Founders and Artistic Directors, Murray Whispers blends two distinct personal connections to the river. For Sarah, a South Australian whose career has spanned collaborations with legends like Margot Fonteyn and Michail Baryshnikov, the Murray is part of her heritage. For Brazilian-born Rejane, who has performed and taught internationally before settling in Adelaide in 2019, the river’s quiet strength is a newly discovered muse.

Since its founding in 2022, Adelaide Ballet has worked to fill a long-missing cultural gap, creating world-class opportunities for local and visiting artists. The company has already secured its own rehearsal space in a heritage-listed building and has presented work to sold-out audiences.
