National Parks and Wildlife Service Celebration

Belair National Park’s Main Oval will be open on Saturday 27 July 2019 between 10am and 2pm to launch the renewed National Parks and Wildlife Service and celebrate World Ranger Day.

To mark the day, entry to Belair National Park will be FREE. Starting from 10am, enjoy free activities and refreshments for purchase before a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony from Traditional Owners, the Kaurna people, and hear from The Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs MP.

Register for a free ranger-guided walk or bus tour or go hunting for water bugs in the lake with an ecologist. These activities are free but bookings are essential. 

Ranger Guided Walk | 10:45am & 12:45pm

Join the rangers on a guided walk and discover the wonderful sites of South Australia’s oldest national park. The rangers will share their wealth of knowledge and explain about some of the challenges in managing and conserving SA’s parks.

Open to anyone 5 and over with a basic level of fitness and ability to walk over uneven ground.

What to bring:

  • Waterproof jacket
  • Hiking boots, preferably with ankle support
  • Long-sleeved light cotton or similar shirt
  • Warm long-sleeve top for stops or if the weather is cool
  • At least one, 1 litre water bottle
  • Small day pack

Ranger Guided Bus Tour | 10:45am & 12:45pm

Join the rangers on a guided bus tour of the park and discover the wonderful sites of South Australia’s oldest national park. From the comfort of a mini bus you can tour areas of the park that are normally inaccessible to public vehicles. The rangers will also share their wealth of knowledge and explain about some of the challenges in managing and conserving our parks.

Kaurna Cultural Walk | 10:45am 

Join Kaurna elder Frank Wanganeen, and Kaurna man Karrl ‘Tamaru’ Smith and the rangers on a walk to hear about the significance of Belair National Park and its importance to Kaurna people.

This community event is open to anyone 5 years and over with a basic level of fitness and ability to walk over uneven ground.

What to bring:

  • Waterproof jacket
  • Hiking boots, preferably with ankle support
  • Long-sleeved light cotton or similar shirt
  • Warm long-sleeve top for stops or if the weather is cool
  • At least one, 1 litre water bottle
  • Small day pack

Water Bug Detectives | 10:45am & 12:30pm

Join the rangers and NRM Education try your hand at pond dipping with nets to investigate the critters that live in Playford. What are these critters, where are they found, how do we catch them and why are they important in our environment? This is your opportunity to have a go at catching, observing then identifying the water bugs you’ve found. Participants don’t have to get wet, but it’s more fun if you do.

Open to anyone age 4+.

What to bring:

  • Old shoes or gum boots
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Long-sleeved light cotton or similar shirt
  • Warm long-sleeve top for stops or if the weather is cool

  • Meeting native Australian animals from Cleland Wildlife Park
  • Scaling the 10m rock climbing wall
  • Taking a tour of historic Old Government House (10am to noon)
  • Making your own ranger badge
  • Seeing the park fire trucks
  • VR activity exploring marine parks
  • Face painting
  • See how you can get involved in volunteering in parks
  • Sausage sizzle by South Australian Ranger Association
  • Coffee and cake

Everyone who attends the guided activities or comes to say g’day to rangers at the NPWS stand can go into the draw to win one of ten parks passes valued at $90.
