New Shanghai | Burnside Village | Review

Whether you’re popping in for dumplings, gathering the family for yum cha or enjoying cocktails at The Bund bar, New Shanghai brings a taste of old-world China to Burnside Village.

Review by Carla Caruso

Dumpling lovers, rejoice! New Shanghai, renowned for serving some of Australia’s most authentic Shanghai-style Chinese cuisine, opened at Burnside Village in September 2026.

Best known for its handcrafted dumplings, made fresh at the live dumpling theatre where chefs fold each bun by hand, the proudly Australian, family-owned restaurant is a welcome addition to the shopping centre’s dining offering.

The brand has been serving traditional Shanghai-style cuisine for more than three decades, with restaurants across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and now Adelaide, as well as a growing presence in the Middle East.

With around 304 seats, the SA eatery features a main dining room, the aforementioned dumpling theatre, The Bund gin bar, three private dining rooms and an outdoor terrace.

The menu, meanwhile, comprises favourites such as xiao long bao (Shanghai soup dumplings filled with pork and savoury broth – best nibbled to release the hot soup!), prawn dumplings with peanut sauce, pan-fried pork buns, braised pork belly, kung pao chicken and stir-fried noodles.

You’ll also find open gua bao, claypot classics, regional Chinese specialties and fresh live seafood, with weekend yum cha and a dedicated bar menu adding even more variety.

The venue’s design evokes the Art Deco glamour of 1930s Shanghai, with a bold red and green palette, brass and gold detailing, and tiled motifs and illuminated features depicting the Shanghai skyline.

Named after Shanghai’s famous waterfront, The Bund bar serves signature gin cocktails, a curated gin and tonic selection and classic cocktails, alongside a wine list showcasing South Australian wines.

The three private dining rooms draw inspiration from traditional Shanghai apothecaries, with medicine-drawer joinery, distressed antique mirrors and marble lazy susans. The rooms can be opened up to accommodate larger groups.

For outdoor dining, the terrace seats around 74 guests and offers elevated views, making it a fab spot for a long, shared lunch.

A Chinese deli counter rounds out the offering, with handcrafted dumplings, festive pastries and ready-to-eat small dishes available to take home. Yummo.

We left the eatery’s official opening night with full stomachs and a genuine taste of the culture.

This could well become our new family favourite for a fun outing!
